How to Renew a Liquor License in California: ABC Requirements & Timeline
In California, your liquor license is the lifeblood of your restaurant or bar. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is strict: if you miss your renewal deadline, you cannot serve alcohol. Period.
1. The 60-Day Renewal Window
The ABC typically sends renewal notices 60 days before your license expires. However, "I didn't get the mail" is not a valid excuse for a lapse. It is your responsibility to know your expiration date.
The Penalty Escalation: If payment is not received by the last day of the month in which the license expires, a 50% surcharge is added. If you are more than 60 days late, the penalty jumps to 100%. At 90 days, the license is automatically revoked.
2. Renewal Fees (2026 Estimates)
Fees vary based on license type (Type 41, 47, 48, etc.) and the population of the city where you operate. Expect to pay between $500 and $1,200 per location annually.
3. The Multi-Location Challenge
If you manage a restaurant group with 5 locations across Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, you aren't tracking one date—you're tracking five. Often, these dates are staggered throughout the year.
Managing this via a shared Google Calendar or an Excel sheet is a recipe for a $600 late fee (or worse, a "Stop Service" order from an ABC agent).
How to Prevent a Lapse
The most successful California operators use a "90-60-30" rule:
- 90 Days: Verify your license status on the ABC's License Query System.
- 60 Days: Watch for the renewal notice and ensure the mailing address on file is current.
- 30 Days: Submit payment via the ABC's Online Renewal System.
