Cannabis Dispensary License Renewal: California & Colorado Guide
In the cannabis industry, compliance isn't just about avoiding a fine—it's about staying out of handcuffs and keeping your inventory from being seized. If you operate in California or Colorado, the renewal process is your most vulnerable moment.
California: The DCC Annual Transition
The Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) has moved most operators from provisional to annual licenses. Annual licenses expire exactly one year from the date of issuance.
The Hard Deadline: The DCC requires renewal applications to be submitted at least 60 days before expiry. If you submit late, you will be charged a penalty. If you don't submit by the expiry date, your license is cancelled and you must stop all METRC activity immediately.
Colorado: The MED Renewal Portal
Colorado's Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) uses the ML1 portal for all retail marijuana renewals. As of August 2024, employee occupational licenses are now valid for two years instead of one. Additionally, as of February 2026, the MED has moved to digital-only licenses, retiring the traditional physical badges.
- Local Approval First: In Colorado, you often need your local municipal renewal approved before the MED will finalize the state renewal.
- Fingerprinting: Check if your associated persons need updated fingerprinting for this renewal cycle.
The "Tracking Gap" in Seed-to-Sale Software
Most dispensary owners rely on their inventory systems (like METRC) or their POS systems to handle compliance. However, these systems are built to track **plants and products**, not **business documents**. They won't alert you if your local fire permit is about to expire, or if your delivery vehicle's registration is out of date.
